Born October 1944, Veta L. Planks was the oldest child and the first to graduate high school from the Planks family. Veta earned her cosmetology license and spent many years working in cosmetology and waitressing. After her marriage to Hosea Morriel in 1971, Veta became a devoted Christian and a loving mother. She gave her self to providing for others by serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Missionary, Choir Member, and Pastoral Support. Her love of others
was easily seen not only in her words but also her actions. Though she devoted much of her time to the church, she never failed to care for her family. The sucessful marriage between Hosea and Veta lasted 36 years, until her death in 2007.
In 2008, Ronald L. Planks founded the Veta L. Morriel Arts & Leadership Academy in honor of his mothers’ memory. Veta L. Morriel, the academy’s namesake, was an avid supporter of the performing arts. She believed in doing all she could to make sure that her children had an opportunity to study music. The Veta L. Morriel Arts and Leadership Academy was created to share the same devotion to others as Veta shared to those around her. It is a not-for-profit organization with a goal to provide students a visual and performing arts education while offering performance experience opportunities. Mr. Planks hopes that the Veta L. Morriel Arts and Leadership Academy will provide many of the same opportunities his mother gave him to the next musical generation.
